Founder Brief

I heard Bret Taylor say that for a long time in SaaS we were building castles. Today, we are building sandcastles.

Last week, Vanguard announced it was acquiring Altruist. Altruist is taking on the duopoly of Fidelity and Schwab building a modernized custodian. They have also been on the leading edge of AI, and their AI platform Hazel is tackling a lot of important workflows in/around the advisor client relationship. Having raised nearly $1b, and attacking a huge problem set, the $4.6b outcome is not surprising given all their momentum. Vanguard had been an early investor, and this is not their first foray into custody.

I share this all to say two things:

• This is a mega transaction in our space, and will change the landscape, for the better.
• To Bret Taylors point above; the moats software businesses once had are far different today than they were for the last couple of decades. The cost of engineering is falling and the importance of clarity in terms of what to build, who to build it for, and your ability to distribute is everything.
